Sony Ericsson registered a new U.S. trademark for “Xperia ION” last December 13 at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The trademark registration spun off rumors of Sony Ericsson’s releasing the Xperia Nozomi as the Xperia ION in the United States.
The trademark application (Serial Number: 85493863) reveals that the registered mark covers goods and services exclusively for mobile phones. We saw a similar trademark registration from Sony Ericson before for its Xperia PLAY and Xperia arc handsets. So, the Xperia ION is definitely a new mobile phone.
Previously leaked information revealed that Sony Ericsson has an upcoming dual-core Android phone codenamed the Sony Ericsson Xperia Nozomi. It is also referred to as the Sony Ericsson Xperia LT26i, presumably the international variant. It will be Sony Ericsson’s first-ever dual-core Android phone, and one with HD display.
Sources have confirmed that the Nozomi will come with not just a 1.5-GHz dual-core processor but also a 4.3-inch HD (1280×720) touchscreen, 1 GB of RAM, Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, a 12-megapixel main camera, and an HDMI port.
Despite the attractive specs of the Xperia LT26i, it may not be the same Xperia Nozomi that will see the light of day in the U.S. A slightly different model, the Sony Ericsson LT28at, has been spotted making the rounds at the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).
The device’s description on the Bluetooth SIG’s End Product Detail page suggests a bigger touchscreen size of 4.55 inches, a 13-megapixel main camera with backside illumination (BSI), a secondary camera capable of 720p HD recording, HD Reality Display technology, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, LED flash, dual microphones for noise cancellation and stereo recording.
The product detail page also suggests that the Sony Ericsson Xperia LT28at is LTE-enabled and could be heading to AT&T.
As to whether the Xperia LT28at’s other hardware specs are the same as those of the Xperia Nozomi (LT26i), no on is certain for now. Although, it is likely that the Sony Ericsson LT28at will be called the Sony Ericsson Xperia ION, especially with the latest trademark filing for that name. Another possible handset name is the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc HD.
The company may unveil the Sony Ericsson Xperia LT28at at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012 next year. The company debuted the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc at this year’s CES.
