Just like that–barely a year has passed, and Motorola has officially announced the “better” successors to the original flagship tablet for Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Just a few hours ago, Motorola officially unveiled the new Motorola XOOM 2 and the Motorola XOOM 2 Media Edition in London.
The new Android tablets will be initially available in the U.K. and in Ireland beginning middle of November. Carphone Warehouse is already accepting preregistrations from U.K. customers. The new tablets will also be soon available at Best Buy, Dixons, PC World, and Currys in the U.K.
Both Android tablets have essentially similar specs, save for the sizes, weight, and battery capacity, and preloaded apps. Common to both the Motorola XOOM 2 and the Motorola XOOM 2 Media Edition are the following:
- dual-core 1.2 GHz processor
- Android 3.2 Honeycomb
- 5-megapixel main camera
- 1.3-megapixel secondary camera
- 1 GB RAM
- 16 GB internal storage
- Corning Gorilla Glass
- MotoCast for streaming files from desktop/laptop to tablet
- Wi-Fi connectivity
The Motorola XOOM 2 has a bigger display–10.1 inches–and comes with Splash-guard protection. It also features 3D virtual surround sound and battery life of over 10 hours (with continuous Web browsing) or over a month on standby. It also comes with business applications such as Citrix Receiver and Citrix GoToMeeting, apart from the standard Google mobile apps.
On the other hand, the Motorola XOOM 2 Media Edition comes with an 8.2-inch display optimized for wide viewing angles. It uses adaptive virtual surround sound technology.
Motorola has also confirmed to Pocket-lint that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be arriving not only on the two new tablets but also to the original Motorola XOOM. Motorola is on the record committing to a 6-week update cycle, which means the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades will start going out to Motorola devices six weeks after Motorola receives the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich from Google.
The company has also recently confirmed that Ice Cream Sandwich for the Motorola DROID RAZR / Motorola RAZR will be coming in early 2012.
Motorola has not provided specific dates for the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades.
